American filmmaker Sean Baker’s movie ‘Anora’ swept the honors at the 97th Academy Awards, securing five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actress. Mikey Madison won the award for Best Actress. Adrien Brody was named Best Actor for his lead role in ‘The Brutalist’, directed by Brady Corbet. This is the second time Brody has won the Oscar for Best Actor.
The first award announced during the Oscar ceremony was Best Supporting Actor, which went to Kieran Culkin for his performance in ‘A Real Pain’, directed by Jesse Eisenberg. The 42-year-old actor first gained popularity through the film ‘Home Alone’. Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress for her role in ‘Emilia Pérez’. The award for Best Animated Feature went to ‘Flow’, making it the first film from Latvia to win an Oscar.
‘Wicked’ won the award for Best Costume Design, with Paul Tazewell making history as the first Black man to receive the Oscar in this category. The Brazilian film ‘I Am Still Here’ won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. Despite receiving the highest number of nominations, ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘The Brutalist’ faced disappointment. ‘Emilia Pérez’, directed by Jacques Audiard, had received 13 nominations, the highest ever for a non-English language film competing for Best Picture.
India’s hopes at the Oscars were dashed as the short film ‘Anuja’, directed by Adam J. Graves and produced by Priyanka Chopra and Guneet Monga, failed to secure an award. ‘Anuja’ was nominated in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Had it won, Guneet Monga would have made history.
