Over 9,000 New Vehicles Arrive at Hambantota Port Since February | Port Authority Speeds Up Clearance!

Sri Lanka’s Hambantota Port said 9,151 vehicles were imported through its facilities since vehicle imports were allowed in February 2025.

Port operations have been streamlined for faster clearing of vehicles, the port said on May 25.

Sri Lanka has imported around 200 million dollars of vehicles and 450 million dollars of letters of credit have been opened, the central bank said on May 22.

Vehicles were the last major import allowed after sweeping import bans were placed in the country in 2020 as aggressively inflationary rate cuts were made by the central bank to target interest rates and potential output, rejecting classical economic principles.
