The Ministry of Transport and Highways, in collaboration with the Department of Motor Traffic Sri Lanka and with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has successfully launched a pilot project aimed at converting 200 petrol-powered, four-stroke three-wheelers into electric vehicles.
The initiative, which focuses on promoting sustainable transport options, primarily targeted beneficiaries from Colombo.
Special consideration was given to female owners, persons with disabilities, and families whose livelihoods depend on a single three-wheeler.
These groups were prioritized in the selection process.
In this phase, 200 petrol three-wheelers will be converted to e-Tuk Tuks. 100 petrol three-wheelers from each of the following locations will be selected:
- Pettah
- Makumbura
