Sri Lanka is reeling from severe weather conditions that have claimed 123 lives across 12 districts, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) reported today. The highest fatalities were recorded in Kandy District, with 51 deaths reported as of 9:00 a.m.
Other districts affected include Badulla (35 deaths), Kegalle (9), Matale (8), Nuwara Eliya (6), Kurunegala (3), Monaragala (2), and one death each in Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Hambantota, and Galle.
The DMC further confirmed that 130 people are reported missing amid the ongoing crisis. A total of 43,925 individuals from 13,690 families have been displaced and are currently residing in 488 temporary shelters.
In response to the escalating disaster, the President has declared a State of Public Emergency to coordinate relief and rescue operations. Authorities continue to urge residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and follow official advisories.
