Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC has made history as the first bank in Sri Lanka to introduce Google Pay for its Visa debit and credit cardholders, in partnership with Google and Visa. This marks a major step forward for the country’s digital payments landscape, offering customers a faster, safer, and more convenient way to pay.
Through this collaboration, Commercial Bank customers can now add their Visa cards to Google Wallet and make secure, contactless payments using NFC-enabled Android smartphones at any Visa-accepted terminal, locally or overseas. The service uses Visa’s advanced tokenization technology via third-party provider IDEMIA and is supported by Euronet’s payment infrastructure, ensuring enhanced security and reliable transaction processing.
Commercial Bank MD/CEO Sanath Manatunge said the partnership reinforces the bank’s commitment to delivering world-class digital payment experiences and accelerating Sri Lanka’s move toward a cashless future. Visa’s Country Manager for Sri Lanka and Maldives, Avanthi Colombage, noted that this launch brings a transformative payment solution to millions of Sri Lankans.
The rollout will begin with select card ranges as part of a phased launch.
