The use of skin whitening creams is widespread in Sri Lanka, but experts warn that bleaching creams may contain harmful ingredients that can cause serious health issues.
The demand for skin whitening products has been steadily increasing, with many people seeking lighter and brighter skin. These creams are often purchased from pharmacies and cosmetic shops, while some are also sold as handmade products.
Consultant Dermatologist Dr. Hiromel De Silva, speaking to the Media, cautioned against using creams that are not registered with the Sri Lankan government or products that lack proper labeling and laboratory details.
Dr. De Silva further warned that some of these creams may contain steroids without proper disclosure, leading to adverse effects such as skin atrophy, dryness, thinning of the skin, redness, itching, burning, and a sticky texture.
In addition, health authorities have raised concerns that these products could also affect heart rhythms, posing further risks to users.
